Chestny ZNAK: Track & Trace System of Russia
Introduction
Chestny ZNAK, which translates to “Honest Label” in English, is a comprehensive product labelling and tracking system that was introduced in Russia to combat the rampant issue of counterfeit goods and to ensure the safety and authenticity of products. Implemented in stages, this ambitious project aims to establish a transparent supply chain while providing consumers with the means to verify the legitimacy of the products they purchase. This blog will explore the importance of Chestny ZNAK, its workflow, barcode regulations, and other key aspects of this innovative system

Workflow of Chestny ZNAK
Chestny ZNAK employs a multi-step workflow to track and authenticate products effectively:
Product Labelling
Data Submission
Logistic Chain
Shop
Sale
Data Verification
Product Labelling
The Centre for Research in Perspective Technologies (CRPT) offers Data Matrix barcodes to Manufacturers that need to be placed on their products. These barcodes contain critical information, including the product’s name, batch number, production date, and serial number.
Data Submission
Manufacturers are required to submit information about the Products along with barcodes to the Chestney ZNAK system.
Logistic Chain
A product with digital marking moves from manufacturers to consumers and is recorded at every stage of the logistic chain by respective owners.
Shop
Products arriving from manufacturers are placed on the shelf of the shop for sale.
Sale
The product is scanned at the cash register for sale and the information of withdrawal of the product from circulation is transferred to the system.
Data Verification
Consumers can use a mobile app to verify the authenticity of a product by scanning its barcode. This step enables consumers to check if the product is genuine.
What is included in the Data Matrix Marking Code?
Russia has developed a dedicated track and trace informative system to monitor pharmaceutical product circulation (IS MDLP). This information system is operated by The Centre for Research in Perspective Technologies (CRPT). CRPT through IS MDLP system provides Data Matrix marking codes to manufacturers to place on their products for circulation.
A Data Matrix marking code is applied to the Secondary (retail) level of packaging. If there is no secondary level of packaging then code is applied to the primary packaging.
The code consists of the following data groups:
Manufacturer Data (Mandatory): GTIN and a Serial Number (14 and 13 digits, respectively);
Operator Data (Mandatory): Verification Key (4 digits) and e-signature (encrypted part, 44 digits).
An operator requests for the code through the emission records and the system issues the code within two hours.
The manufacturer places the encrypted data matrix code on the product and the details of the encrypted code are transferred to the system. The product with the encrypted code is tracked from manufacturer to consumer to counter duplication.
Conclusion
Chestny ZNAK is a vital initiative in Russia’s ongoing battle against counterfeit products. Its multifaceted approach, encompassing product labelling, data submission, and verification, is proving effective in ensuring consumer safety and regulatory compliance. By creating a transparent supply chain and empowering consumers with the means to verify product authenticity, Chestny ZNAK plays a crucial role in building trust in the market.
This innovative system has the potential to serve as a model for other countries seeking to combat counterfeit goods and prioritize consumer safety. As it continues to evolve and expand, Chestny ZNAK promises to be a formidable tool in the fight against fake and potentially dangerous products in Russia.
